Background

Our Grandfather Story's (OGS) Matt approached me with a brief to create an animated short story on a Singaporean topic. With a brief so fluid, it was impossible to decline - but I would soon realise the huge hurdle of having never animated anything longer than 10-seconds. Partnering up with a friend from my internship at BLKJ, Rachel Chew, we tried our hand at capturing an alternative Singaporean love story.

Rachel and I sat at the living room of the woman whose story our short was based on. With coffee and cookies in hand, she spoke candidly about how she fell in love with a bisexual drag queen while studying abroad in London back in the 1990s. Met with resistance at so many points of their story, she trudged through and unrelentingly loved him.

I decided on a simple art style, but accepted the inevitable backache regardless. The simplicity was inspired by shorts I'd seen on Great Big Story such as This Tree in Germany Could Bring You Love and The Sweet Sound of ‘GOOOAAAL!’ - The flat colours and thick lines were bold and enchanting to watch. I worked mainly on Clip Studio Paint, and arranged the compositions on After Effects. OGS's Jiahui worked on the voice acting which I thought captured the sincerity of the story really well. She also worked on the sound production which added the perfect atmosphere and quirk to the video.
